In making photographs, I look for abstraction in the ordinary things around us, points where form and value create their own beauty and the identity of the objects themselves no longer matters. I create very small prints because they call for deliberate acts of attention in a visually crowded world. My prints are also close to the size of the 35mm negative, so they retain the clarity of the original recording of light and shadow. I work from this starting point the way a printmaker works with an etched plate. Many possibilities are inherent in the negative, and in the printing process, I determine the nature of the final image. I want my photographs to seem like windows onto another aspect of reality, where earthly laws of light and shadow reveal patterns that could occur at any scale.
