Nancy Scull’s photography captures intimate views of nature that often yield abstract images. Her art offers visions that a quick glance might overlook. While representing life’s enduring spirituality and sense of mystery, the images themselves are fleeting—a shadow that disappears moments after the shutter clicks; leaves that are gone by winter; snow that is already melting; tides that ebb and flow, special lighting effects created by the ever changing angle of the sun. This constant reinvention of our world reminds us to savor life’s special experiences as they happen. Ms. Scull’s fine prints capture and share some of these moments.

Her recent work focuses on trees and marshes. Transcending the subject matter itself, these photographs present a complex panoply of other images. Bark, grasses, and marsh streams offer interesting shapes, textures, and reflections. Growths often suggest other life forms. Cavities, co-existing plant life, and the uniqueness of the light, challenge the imagination and stimulate the senses.

In addition to being influenced by the work of photographers Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Minor White, her parallel interests in art and music—particularly works of the 20th Century—contribute to her approach with the camera. Hence, her images may recall some hint of the Impressionists, Picasso, O’Keeffe—with perhaps an overtone of Debussy, Ravel, or Sibelius.

Ms. Scull has been involved in photography all her life. Her first camera, an advertising premium from the TV show Super Circus, she ‘bought’ by sending away 50 cents and two Snickers candy bar wrappers when she was 8. Working at Polaroid Corporation in early adulthood provided her first darkroom experience and solidified her interest in photographic art.

In January 2000, she started pursuing this latent desire in earnest. Returning to her earlier love of the black and white medium, she has been studying with Nick Johnson at the New England School of Photography, and is a founding member of The Argentum Fine Art Photographers.

In the tradition of the black and white masters, she utilizes the Zone System and a large format (4x5) view camera to provide detail in the full range of tonal values. Her 16x20-inch enlargements are presented in white mats with black frames, 22x26 inches. A few of her images are medium-format negatives enlarged to 11x14-inch prints, matted and framed to 16x20 inches. Her gelatin silver prints have been selenium toned for added contrast and depth.

Ms. Scull spent her early life in eastern Pennsylvania, and earned her A.B. degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Her career as a computer industry executive spanned three decades.
