My photographs are all made with a large-format, 4 X 5 camera. I use Ilford Delta 400 with Perceptol, and I print on Ilford Multigrade Fiber, glossy. I tone them in Selenium as a final step.
These are about the only facts I can tell you about my photographs. I don’t know if I know what they are about, except that I know they are about something. I can feel it when I look at them. Photographs are in the realm of visual expression, and so I think that’s how you can best experience them; by looking at them. I recommend that they be viewed not with a desire to “understand” them, to situate them within a greater artistic movement, or anything like that. I can tell you that I made them with no regard to this kind of thing whatsoever, as I lend it no importance whatsoever. So, I recommend that you view them as images that either invoke something in you or not. What is important to me is that they be honest expressions.
I guess I can mention a few other facts about them: It was very exciting to visualize them when I saw the subject, it was exciting to make them, and when I saw them matted, I felt that the universe came together, even if for a brief moment. But that’s just me. I hope they bring something to you.
